Kristina Roper has been an educator in the Central Valley for more than 30 years and served two terms on her local school board. It is high time College of the Sequoias had an educator on its Board of Trustees, someone who knows what students, faculty, and staff need to succeed.
For more than 30 years, Kristina Roper has lived and worked right here in the Central Valley: first building a career in archaeology and historic preservation, then spending decades as a professor at Fresno State, and running a small business of her own.
Long before she thought about higher education policy, she was already living it: Kristina served two full terms on her local school board, learning firsthand what it takes to govern a public institution responsibly, transparently, and in the interest of the students and staff it serves.
If elected, Kristina would be the first academic to serve on the College of the Sequoias Board of Trustees, bringing a classroom-level understanding of what students, faculty, and staff actually need to a board that sets policy for all of them.
Everything Kristina wants to accomplish on the Board is rooted in what COS faculty, students, and the community have been asking for.
Expand trade and technical programs so Valley students can build real careers close to home, not just four-year degrees. That means bringing back the vet tech program and starting a forestry program, so every COS student, whether headed for a skilled trade, a transfer degree, or a certificate program, has a real path.
Be a good steward of the $95 million partnership with Fresno State, where Kristina was a professor, so Valley students who want a four-year degree can earn it right here at home.
Keep lowering the cost, scheduling, and transportation barriers that keep working adults and first-generation students out of the classroom, and make it easier for them to earn their degree from start to finish. Kristina spent decades mentoring first-generation students at Fresno State, so she knows what it takes to get them enrolled and keep them enrolled.
Strengthen partnerships with local employers so COS graduates have real opportunities to work here, and when the community invests in them, they stay and keep building it. As a small business owner in the Central Valley herself, Kristina understands what local employers need from COS graduates.
Bring the same fiscal responsibility and transparency she practiced across two full terms on her local school board to every decision the COS Board makes. She has seen firsthand how a governing board's choices ripple through classrooms and budgets, and she will put students, teachers, and the community first.
Kristina will be an active member of the Board. She will show up on campus to talk with students, staff, educators, and administrators, so the Board hears what is actually needed.
